Your Country Needs You – We Must Stay in the Single Market
Prime Minister Theresa May is set to deliver a Brexit speech tomorrow outlining her plans for Britain to leave the Single Market. Hard Brexit, it seems, is just around the corner. We can still stop this.
Membership of the Single Market Treaty wasn’t on the ballot paper because Parliament did not intend it to be. The Prime Minister has no legal mandate to take us out of the Single Market Treaty, and take away our single market rights and freedoms without Parliamentary approval. So on 29th December we launched our court case to give Parliament a vote.
The Single Market is not an EU institution, and membership is covered by a separate non-EU Treaty (the EEA Agreement ). Parliament permitted the Government to sign the Treaty in 1993 – and because Parliament took us into the Single Market, Parliament must take us out. Theresa May doesn’t want to give Parliament a vote, but with your help, we can change that.
The claimants in our case are Peter Wilding and Adrian Yalland. On 23rd June 2016, Peter voted Remain and Adrian voted Leave. They disagreed over membership of the EU but both agree Britain’s membership of the ‘Single Market’ or European Economic Area (EEA) was not something the referendum on EU membership covered.
We have an experienced team of solicitors and barristers behind us. Our solicitors are Harcus Sinclair LLP, led by Damon Parker and Rosanne Murray. We have selected our barristers across three sets, Monckton Chambers, Serle Court and 4 Stone Buildings, to have the right combination of EU/EEA, international and public law expertise. They are George Peretz QC, Anneli Howard, Dakis Hagen, Charlotte Beynon and Charles Marquand.
To keep the legal campaign going, we need to raise funds. That’s why we’re campaigning to raise funds to ensure our legal fees and other costs are in-part met for not just this round, but future stages of the legal challenge. With your support we can give Parliament a vote to decide whether we stay in the Single Market or not – regardless of leaving the European Union under Article 50.
